Annual Events

Ace Fighter Shield

One of our founder members, Ace Fighter, died at a very young age.  His widow, Ocean Lady, set up the Shield in his memory.  Each year, starting in January, members are invited to take part and are asked to bring all QSL's received with the WW callsign to the December meeting.  The member who has confirmed the most contacts is awarded a replica of the shield to keep, and their name is inscribed on the main shield for posterity.

DX'pedition

For the past few years, we have held a Club DX'pedition.  We usually pick a high point in the Precelly Mountains and just chat away to anyone who feels they want to come in to the channel.  We send all contacts a club QSL card and make no charge.  However, we usually manage to pick the worst evening of the year and all end up nursing the 'flu for weeks afterward.  We have a small barbecue, usually inside a caravan and hot drinks and still find it amazing at the number of breakers that come along for an eyeball.

Club Outing

We try each year to give the members a freebie in the form of an outing of some description or another locally.  In the past these have included a trip round Oakwood, which is our local theme park, a trip to Manor Park, a local wildlife centre coupled with a small fair for the children.

Other Events

Fishing Competition

We organised a shore fishing competition with a prize of £100 for the winner.  We managed to get a day when it wasn't raining and  several breakers to act as stewards to stay in contact via handheld CB's.  A good day was had by all, especially the fish who mainly managed to stay in the ocean!

Barbecues or Beach Picnics

We try to have at least one of these a year and take it in turns to burn the food on the barbecue!  One memorable year we thought we had lit a signal beacon and ended up eating charcoal but a certain dog that was with us seemed to enjoy eating banger-flavoured bones!  We understand from Bosun, whose dog it was, that it was very poorly later in the evening.  Another year, the whole beach shook, we got home to discover Texaco had an explosion at the Refinery and many of us had no windows left in our houses, we dread to think what could've happened if we'd been at home.

Car Treasure Hunts

For the past two years, Omega and Ocean Lady have laid out a treasure hunt.  These have not been well attended but, for the few that do attend, they seem to have a whale of a time and keep asking for more.

Karaoke Nights

We have held several of these, just to prove that you don't need to be able to sing to have fun

Club Evenings

We try, after the formal part of the meeting which Omega tries to keep brief although sometimes the members won't let him, to finish off with a quiz, bingo, pool/darts competitions etc and of course, most people partake of a drop of wobbly water from their glass prayerbooks!
